Assistive Technology Screener©
Manual and Resource Guide Item #MSR1 $49
Protocol Packs (Set of 25 protocol and reporting forms) Item #PSR1 $25

The Assistive Technology Screener© was created in response to the requests of several school districts in Central Texas for a tool to document assistive technology in an educational setting. It is designed to be used as part of a comprehensive system of Assistive Technology Assessment. We hope that using the Screener will help you turn the task of Assistive Technology Assessment into an organized, cooperative process.

The Assistive Technology Screener© is designed to be used by an individual or a team to review the assistive technologies used and suggested for use by a student. It includes both high tech and low tech intervention strategies. Every section includes an “Other” entry to be used at the discretion of the professional.

The Assistive Technology Screener© is not a standardized test. It is a guide for discussion, problem-solving and decision-making. The Screener offers Special Education and Rehabilitation professionals a way to quickly and easily screen the assistive technology needs of all students. It meets both state and federal guidelines for Assistive Technology Assessment.

The Screener offers four potential recommendations based on the information collected:

  • Current technologies and strategies meet the students needs
  • Different and/or additional technologies and/or strategies need to be tried
  • An extended Assistive Technology Evaluation is needed
  • No assistive technology devices or services are needed.

How and why the team may arrive at each recommendation is discussed in the Manual.

The Assistive Technology Screener© protocol is divided into three sections; the Basic Screener, the Sensory Impairment Appendix and the Discussion Section.

The Basic Screener consists of nine sections. It is not disability specific and may be applicable to any student. It is a short form with data that can be used to create an assistive technology report or can be inserted into the reports or various related service providers, the comprehensive individual assessment and/or Individual Educational Plan (IEP). The Sensory Impairment Appendix consists of two sections, vision and hearing. It was separated into an appendix due to the requirements in many states that vision and/or hearing Assistive Technology Assessments be conducted by certified specialists. The Discussion Section is a narrative section. Both the Sensory Impairment Appendix and Discussion Section are additional pages that can be utilized where necessary.

No product names or manufacturers are used in the Screener protocol. Generic categories of items are used in both high tech and low tech divisions. Specific products can change quickly. Categories of assistive technology may change over time, but at a much slower rate. Many different products may fit into a single category.

The Assistive Technology Screener© is not an endorsement of any product, item or system. Specific products are referenced in the Manual to provide you with a frame of reference to be used in completing the checklist. Additional information on assistive technology devices and/or services is contained in the Manual. The inclusion or exclusion any specific product, item or system should not be interpreted as an endorsement or recommendation.
