Vocational
Communication Academics Technology (VoCAT)
What Makes VoCAT Different?
VoCAT is college for a very special set of students. VoCAT is a group
of classes that are specially designed for adult students with
severe disabilities. Its’ unique
design ensures that every student can be successful.
Class Content & Activities
Each class follows a course syllabus with key learning objectives. Each student
works with the instructor to select individualized goals from the course’s
set of learning objectives. The result is a customized curriculum to meet
each participant’s individual needs.
VoCAT classes do not cover:
Life Skills
Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
Recreational or Leisure Skills
Community Outings
Modifications
The VoCAT program is planned and organized to meet the needs of students
with disabilities. Most students will be successful without additional
modifications. However, if a student or parent/guardian believes that additional
modifications
are needed, they may request additional modifications by contacting
VoCAT staff and/or the ACC Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD).
Appropriate documentation
will be requested at the time the modifications are determined.
Students may consult the Student Handbook or contact ACC-OSD directly for
documentation
guidelines.
Also note, Modifications do not:
Change class content
Provide bilingual services
Include transportation
Personal Attendant Care
Most VoCAT students do not need a personal attendant. Our low student:teacher
ratio helps ensure student independence and success.
If your student does need a personal attendant, our guidelines are:
The attendant
must be present when the student attends class.
Parents and siblings may
not be personal attendants.
If your student needs a personal attendant and
you are having difficulty finding one, let us know. We may be able to help.
